The story behind Ourootstory

Matt Rascon has been a multimedia journalist since 2012—interviewing thousands of people and writing, shooting and editing their stories for TV, radio, podcasts and the web. Early in his career, he fell in love with meeting people, learning about their experiences and bringing their stories to life in creative and compelling ways. Working in the news industry, he learned that storytelling has the power to divide, to unite, to confuse, to clarify or to bring about change. But it wasn’t until he began interviewing his own grandparents and family members that he realized the power to change lives that comes from knowing and remembering the stories that make up our roots.

Why do we do what we do?

Each person has a story worth sharing and remembering. In a world of so much division and confusion, with so many voices competing for our attention, we would all benefit from remembering where we come from and how we got to where we are. From remembering our struggles and the power that helped us overcome. From learning about the trials and triumphs of others. From seeing what makes us similar. We know learning about, sharing and remembering the past and present helps us to face the future with greater faith and optimism.

We believe the best way to share and remember your roots is to partner with a professional team who has the equipment and experience needed to bring your stories to life. We want to help you capture the most important moments, create your own video biography or family history documentary that can be viewed over and over again for generations to come.

How does it work?

The Ouroots team is committed to bringing your story and the stories of your loved ones to life. Here’s how it works:

1. Reach out: It starts with you reaching out to our team here or by email or text or through our Instagram or Facebook accounts.

2. Consultation: We will follow up with a consultation to get to know you and determine the service, the time and the place that best fit your story.

3. Interview: We come to you. We want to meet you in a place where you or your loved one feels comfortable. This usually happens in the home of the person we are interviewing. We can answer any other questions you might have. We’ll set up our equipment to make sure it looks and sounds good. And then we’ll have a conversation. We’ll have questions to ask but we are mainly there to listen.

4. Gathering: This includes gathering other elements of your story. This could include shooting additional video of you or your loved ones, gathering relevant photos and clarifying important dates and details of your story.

5. Post-Production: This is the part that takes the longest for us. This includes ingesting and logging the interview(s) and editing it into a beautiful video biography or family history documentary using the interview, additional video, pictures and music.

6. Finish: Receive your edited story, including a condensed version that you can easily post to social media.
